FREE Kick off conference 2012 (ESSCA School of Management, Angers)

ESSCA School of Management (Angers, France) hosted the Football Research in an Enlarged Europe (FREE) Kick-Off Conference on Friday 20 April 2012. The conference not only marked the official launch of the project, but was also at the same time an excellent opportunity to bring together, at the very beginning of the research work, the consortium and a series of external experts in order to engage in a debate on the scientific concepts that underpin the rationale of FREE.

The organisers were extremely pleased to welcome some of Europe’s leading scholars who have accepted to share their expertise on issues such as: ‘The Anthropology of Europe’ (Marion Demossier, Southampton); ‘The Pitfalls of Identity Research’ (Sophie Duchesne, Nanterre); ‘The European Public Sphere’ (Hans-Jörg Trenz, Copenhagen).

These conceptual exposés were followed by a series of more football-related contributions: some reflections on ‘Football as a serious object of study’ (Christian Bromberger, Aix-en-Provence);  a critical reading of FREE’s ambition to take ‘Football research beyond the state-of-the-art’ (Gabriele Klein, Hamburg), as well as some non-academic observations on football supporters by Simon Kuper (Financial Times).

This public Kick-Off Conference was followed by an internal coordination and research meeting of the consortium on Saturday 21 April.
